Francis Poulenc composed his violin sonata between 1942 and 1943, when he was living in Paris. It is dedicated to the memory of Federico Garcia Lorca, the Spanish poet. The sonata was first performed by the composer with the violinist Ginette Neveu, and became a regular item In their programs together.

Poulenc was less familiar with string instruments. The cellist Pierre Fournier helped him to write the Cello Sonata, which he premiered with the composer as the pianist. Poulenc destroyed all sketches for string quartets and three for violin sonatas, while only the fourth one survived, but was received critically.

He discarded two violin sonatas before he composed this one, which was a long time in reaching its final form. He originally wrote this sonata in 1942 and 1943, for the magnificent young French violinist Ginette Neveu, who lost her life in a plane crash at the age of thirty, in 1949.
